Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
