Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories Following Recent Detentions

NBA game action

Miami put up 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies

Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146 to 114 victory against the Grizzlies in their first NBA game since guard Rozier was arrested over alleged unlawful gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested in connection with a sweeping federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men deny the allegations.

However, the Heat were focused as they scored eighty-six opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year existence.

Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and afterwards stated Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Bam said. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our team.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."

Portland also secured their first game after the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139 to 119 victory against the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests

Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."

The commissioner also mentioned an league probe into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
