AFP officers charged the young male on the 18th of December. They claim he belongs to a purported loosely organised internet-based crime network concealed by keyboards in order to initiate an “urgent and large-scale emergency response”.

In connection with the probe, officers confiscated a number of digital devices and a banned gun located in the juvenile’s possession. This operation was conducted under Taskforce Pompilid established in October 2025.

Authorities Issue a Stark Warning

An acting assistant commissioner, speaking generally, advised that those operating under the illusion they can break the law from behind a computer and hidden personas were on notice.

Federal authorities stated it initiated its investigation after getting tip-offs from US federal agents.

An FBI assistant director, from the FBI's international wing, remarked that the “hazardous and disruptive offense” of fake emergency calls put lives at risk and drained vital public safety assets.

“This investigation shows that anonymity in the digital realm is an illusion,” he commented in a joint statement alongside Australian police.

He continued, “We are committed to collaborating with international partners, our international partners, and tech companies to identify and prosecute individuals that misuse the internet to inflict damage to society.”

Court Next Steps

The youth has been indicted on multiple counts of misuse of telecom services and a further count of unlawful ownership of an illegal weapon. He could face up to fourteen years in prison.

“The AFP’s commitment (is|remains) to halting the distress and anguish individuals of this online crime network are inflicting on the community, under the mistaken belief they are hidden,” the official stated.
