Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded players for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.

The Cause of the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's historic 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The team went 4-11 in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
