Taliban Employed Discarded UK Technology to Track Down Afghans That Served Alongside Allied Forces, Investigation Hears
A confidential source has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK left behind confidential technology enabling the Taliban to track down Afghans who collaborated with allied troops.
Data Breach Endangers Numerous in Danger
The whistleblower, identified as Person A, explained that people concerned by the security lapse were advised to relocate and alter their mobile numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.
MPs are investigating the Conservative government's handling of a catastrophic leak of confidential data involving almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to come to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.
Data Disclosure Was Discovered
A data file including their personal data, comprising identities, contact details and occasionally relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker stationed at special operations center in February 2022.
The incident became known only in August 2023, when details of several individuals who had applied to move to Britain were posted on online platforms.

Protective Actions
Because she was restricted, the source and the non-governmental organization she was working with informed individuals at risk they were working with that they had “concerns that certain devices had been intercepted”.
“Our suggestion was that they change residence when possible and switched their contact details. That constituted the crucial data that, if the Taliban acquired this information, would lead to their location being found,” Person A explained.
Challenged Assessments
The source disputed that an official review conducted by a retired civil servant had been mistaken to state that the possession of the records by the Taliban was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The important fact is that affected people are in hiding from militant forces; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to past work history.”
She detailed disturbing treatment experienced by concerned people, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“There are cases of young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get the family to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
